Product Photography
Product photography or advertising photography is used to help sell products and services. Advertising agencies and in-house advertising departments frequently hire commercial photographers to produce photographs of products ranging from perfume or jewelry to dog food, cars, boats, or fishing lures. No product is too glamorous or too obscure to escape the attention of the photographer's lens.
Many product photographs are stark, almost sterile — particularly if the photograph is to be used in a catalog and needs to depict the product literally. But product photos used in advertising, particular upscale, high-end advertising, can be made with such artistic vision that they almost appear to be fine art photographs.
Commercial photography of products may include, in addition to the photographer, an art director, a creative director, an account executive, and various assistants.
Many commercial photographers devote themselves to creating very artistic product photographs that rise to the level of fine art, while others do product photography to pay the bills, while the photographer creates his own fine art photography on the side.
